It happened a while ago. A reader wrote me an email with a request that intrigued me. At that time, unfortunately, I didn't have an answer to give her, but I marked that request by labeling it as "post to write". From the title you will already understand what I'm talking about. That reader had been asked to create a creative writing workshop for kids in a juvenile prison, but she didn't know how to proceed. I have never created a creative writing workshop, but I wanted to think about it and finally wrote this post which represents my ideal writing workshop.
Why participate in a writing workshop? I don't know why those kids should have attended it, perhaps it was part of an educational and recreational program in the prison. Do you become writers after attending a workshop? No, but you Phone Number Data acquire something that is worth much more: the awareness of what lies behind the art of writing, the knowledge of the true meaning of history, the exchange of ideas and criticisms, the possibility of dreaming. All things you can learn on your own, you might say. And you're right. But not everyone is able to learn without someone's help, for some - especially if housed in a prison - this workshop is like an activity outside of everyday life.
Involvement as the first objective The main problem is managing to involve participants. Even if you choose to attend a writing workshop, the person teaching must instill a valid motivation to continue those lessons and I don't think it's easy. How to get involved? Knowing who participates, first of all. I remember that at school none of my teachers - except for a middle school mathematics teacher - managed to make me appreciate the subject. Why? Because no one had made the effort to know me and therefore understand me. Here is how to involve the participants: knowing them, understanding their needs and their dreams, their hopes, their objectives.
